The Valley Railroad Company
Everything here leads to adventure when you’re taking a trip on the Essex Steam Train or the riverboat. They have been serving the Lower Connecticut River Valley since 1971 with train and riverboat excursions, 4-course meals on the restored 1920’s locomotive, and even rail-biking!
Mystic Aquarium
The town of Mystic boasts an aquarium where you can explore animals from five habitats (rainforest, Arctic, wetlands, desert, and open oceans). One of these is the beluga pod which is officially the largest outdoor beluga habitat in the United States. There are also exhibits, like the Jurassic Giants exhibit, and on-site animal encounters with penguins, seals, dolphins, and rays.
Mark Twain House and Museum
The author is famous for being one of the nation’s defining cultural figures and as such, it is no surprise that his 25-room Victorian mansion (which is also a National Historic Landmark) has been converted into a museum. You’ll learn about his life and works, watch a documentary and enjoy some if in the rotating exhibition hall. Plan a guided tour in advance, because the tickets are sold out days ahead of time.
